"...the key to producing well-qualified teachers is to greatly enhance their professional learning across the continuum of a career in a classroom."
--Gary Sykes (1999)
Founded in 2017 by Dr. Matty Lau, the Teacher Learning Consultancy operates under the core belief that excellent STEM teachers must go on learning in order to keep teaching STEM well. By taking an engineering approach, the Teacher Learning Consultancy collaborates with clients to create programs, curricular resources, and research tools tailored to clients’ needs with respect to designing and continually improving their teacher learning programs and resources. Teacher Learning Consultancy clients have included the New York City Department of Education, New Visions for Public Schools, and Columbia University.
Matty Lau, PhD, Founder and Principal
Matty brings her broad range of experience in Science Education to bear on helping clients improve STEM education. Matty studied Physics at Bryn Mawr College, taught Math, Physics, and Physical Science to high school and middle school students in the NYC area, earned her Doctorate in Education at the University of Maryland, College Park. Prior to the start of the Teacher Learning consultancy, she worked at the University of Pittsburgh Learning Research and Development Center, the University of Pennsylvania, the Knowles Teacher Initiative, the New York Hall of Science, and the 100kin10 Foundation. Through all of that, she worked as a STEM teacher educator developing new and veteran K-12 STEM teachers (in Physics, Chemistry, Earth Science, Life Science, Engineering, and Mathematics), wrote and tested educative STEM curriculum materials that integrated engineering with science learning, conducted educational research on high quality science teaching, as well as built the capacity of and supported program teams engaged in continuous improvement work.
Working across these varied areas allowed Matty to develop an engineering approach to help her clients iteratively evaluate and improve their STEM teacher learning programs and resources.
